Self-managing Part 2

Armed with a peak-flow meter and a chart you can be your own lay-physician by assessing the state of your condition daily and taking the necessary action when you observe a deterioration. It is important to note your best reading because it is a useful barometer of how good or bad your condition is at an given time.

To do this you need to blow into a peak=flow meter morning and night. Try and get into a routine of doing it at approximately the same time each day whenever possible. But don't be obsessional about the timing. It is much better to do it regularly every day rather than worry about getting the time right.

Here are guidelines on how to use a peak-flow meter as described by the National Asthma Campaign:

  • Check that the marker on the meter it at zero
  • Sit upright or stand.
  • Hold the meter level, and keep your fingers away from the pointer
  • Take a big breath in
  • Close your lips firmly around the mouthpiece
  • Blow out as hard and as quickly as you can
  • Look at your score
  • Reset the marker and start again
  • Do this three times and write the best score on your chart
