Severity - Level One.
Written by Clive Chung on 3:06 AMAsthma is a very individual illness. Different things trigger the condition in different people and the level of severity differs from person to person. Some patients will hardly be aware that they have asthma for most of their lives and only experience a few mild attacks now and again. Others will be aware of the condition somewhere in the background but so long as they monitor their breathing, take regular medication, and minimize the triggers they will lead full lives and experience very few flare-ups. But there are people with severe asthma who are aware of the condition all the time. They may lead limited lives, experience repeated attacks and they are continually being hospitalised. Fortunately it is rare for people to experience this level of severity.
Anyone's asthma can change form one level to another. So asthma regarded as sever today does not always stay that way. This is why it is important to have regular check-ups with your doctor or asthma nurse. The level of severity can go up or down and the medication needs to be adjusted accordingly.
Level One:
If you hardly ever experience symptoms except when you are doing physical exercise or are in very cold weather, the chances are that the linings of your airways are only sightly inflamed and your asthma is mild. Obviously if you can cut out some of the triggers, you may keep the condition at bay. You will not need preventative treatment but it is advisable to carry a bronchodilator with you all the time. Bronchodilators open up the airways and as such they are knows as relievers.
